Robert P. George receives degrees of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) and Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) from Oxford University
On November 4th, Oxford University conferred on Robert P. George the degrees of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) and Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) at its degree granting ceremony in the Sheldonian Theatre.
The degree, which is one of Oxford's higher doctorates, is sometimes conferred by Diploma on foreign heads of state and on the Chancellor of Oxford University. The degree is conferred "by accumulation" of scholarship in recognition of "exceptionally insightful and distinctive publications that contain significant and original contributions to the study of law or politics in general." Where the recipient of the D.C.L. is not already a holder of the Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) degree, it is necessary for that degree to be awarded as well. The D.C.L. is senior to all Oxford degrees except the Doctor of Divinity (D.D.).
