In Memoriam: Donald Rumsfeld ’54

July 1, 2021

The James Madison Program is saddened to learn of the death of Donald Rumsfeld ’54—U.S. Naval officer, business leader, public servant. Mr. Rumsfeld, who twice served as U.S. Secretary of Defense, was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the Madison Program. He met personally with the Program’s Undergraduate Fellows and, together with his wife Joyce and their family foundation, provided much appreciated financial support. Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and the Madison Program’s Director, observed that “Donald Rumsfeld was a loyal and enthusiastic Princeton alumnus who believed in our University’s high ideals of scholarship, leadership, and public spiritedness. I will always be grateful for his friendship and for his generosity to the University and our Program.”
