Ricardo DuchesneProfessor, Department of Social Science, University of New Brunswick Saint John
Author of The Uniqueness of Western Civilization (Brill, 2011)

This lecture will explore the notion that western civilization has been severely devalued in the academic world in the last decades, and yet is the home of the greatest cultural accomplishments and heroic deeds in history. Professor Duchesne’s new book is The Uniqueness of Western Civilization (Brill, 2011).

Ricardo Duchesne is Professor in the Department of Social Science at The University of New Brunswick, Saint John, where he has been teaching since 1995.  His first book, The Uniqueness of Western Civilization, was published in 2011.  As he writes in the Preface, this book is the product of ten years of isolated research and secluded reflection.  He earned a B.A. in History at McGill University and Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. He earned an M.A. at Concordia, with a thesis on the origins of the French Revolution under the supervision of George Rudé, one of the leading proponents of "history from below". He earned his Ph.D. in the multidisciplinary program of Social & Political Thought at York University, Toronto, where his three fields of concentration were modern European history, political economy, and the philosophy of Hegel.
