The lecture will challenge the widespread, even dominant, view of politics as nothing but a vehicle for raw power and domination. Such false realism obfuscates both the very real quest for justice but also those admirable exemplars of greatness of soul, tempered by moderation, that are very much part of political reality, too.  Against the culture of repudiation, Mahoney aims to recover the understanding of statesmanship as honorable ambition and one of the highest expressions of human excellence.

Daniel J. Mahoney is a Senior Writer at Law & Liberty, Professor Emeritus at Assumption University, and Senior Fellow at the Real Clear Foundation. For the 2020-2021 academic year, he was the Garwood Visiting Fellow in the James Madison Program at Princeton University. Among his many books are Bertrand de Jouvenel: The Conservative Liberal and the Illusions of Modernity, The Other Solzhenitsyn: Telling the Truth about a Misunderstood Writer and Thinker, and The Idol of Our Age: How the Religion of Humanity Subverts Christianity. Mahoney’s latest book, The Statesman as Thinker: Portraits of Greatness, Courage, and Moderation, will be published by Encounter Books on May 10, 2022.
