Professor Bernard Haykel, James Madison Program faculty associate and co-director of the James Madison Program Initiative on Freedom of Thought, Inquiry, and Expression, has been appointed to the Nelson Mandela Chair in Afro Asian Studies, which is a visiting professorship at Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam, Kerala, India. The Mandela Chair was established with the aim of initiating studies and research on Afro-Asian affairs from the perspective of International Relations. Haykel plans to spend time over the summer in India in this capacity. Haykel is in the midst of a project funded by the Henry Luce Foundation to study Muslims in India.
